THE WOMEN WHO: Viv Chen

Viv is a California-based fashion and culture writer. Originally working in public health, it wasn't until the pandemic that led to a transition into fashion writing and, eventually, her substack: The Molehill. Viv always provides smart angles and unique content – I never miss it!

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

I cuddle my dog and bury my face in her fur.

How do you approach getting dressed?

Mostly mood driven. I dress according to how much I want to be perceived. Sometimes I'm in the mood to radiate my love for fashion and I don't know, wear a dog shaped purse because that always strikes people's fancies! Other days I want to blend in with the crunchy eco-hipsters of the Bay Area and wear vibram sole mocs with a flow cotton skirt.

What's one small thing that brings you joy lately?

I love polishing my jewelry! It's soothing and I enjoy watching the tarnish and grime turn into reflective gleaming metal.

If you could pass down one "heirloom" which would it be?

Hmmm probably my bespoke jade jellybean ring from Soft Good Studio.

If you could tell your 10-year-old self something, what would it be?

Savor the pre-internet life...you're the last generation to experience part of childhood without the inescapable internet/social media we have now.

Do you collect anything?

I am an avid collector of FW99 Miu Miu and Prada pieces! Those collections were the most charming combination of sporty and witchy and colorful.

What's a piece of advice you come back to often?

I'm probably not saying this in the quippiest or most elegant way, but I truly believe that consistency is more important than raw talent when it comes to achieving a goal.

What is the last thing you do before bed?

I take off all my rings and tuck them into my jewelry box! I can't sleep with rings on – the sensation is so weird to me!
