THE WOMEN WHO: Tess Comrie

Tess is an Ojai-based singer/songwriter, photographer, baker, and creative spirit — and one of Emma’s dearest friends. Read below on how Tess starts and finishes each day, what gives her confidence, her collections, and her favorite ER styles.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I’ve been really into paying attention to my dreams lately, so the first thing I do is try to recall anything important from the night before. After that, without fail is say good morning to my 7 year old pup, Oliver, who sleeps at my feet. Usually he’ll come up to cuddle in the early morning hours and I always take a few moments to really connect with him before the day starts. He’s always so warm and tender in those first few minutes after waking, and it really grounds me in what’s important.

If you could tell your 10 year-old self something, what would it be?
To never stop dancing, and do it like nobody’s watching (because they probably aren’t). Ten was the age I became acutely aware of my body, and how other people were perceiving it. It’s taken me a long time to finally let that go and let myself move freely (and dance!) again. I actually have a song on my upcoming record all about that moment of realizing how much I was bracing myself for other’s approval, and learning to dance on my own in my living room again felt rebellious. Now it feels like if I’m not doing that, something must be out of sync.

Do you collect anything?
I might have an addiction to buying vintage Levi’s…. My friends at Swimmers back home in Salt Lake have the best selection, and I can’t visit without buying a pair or two. That being said, I try to keep it at no more than 20(ish) pairs at a time, and love fitting friends in ones I’m not wearing as often and sending them home with them to live out another chapter of life.

What is your favorite season for dressing?
I love a big sweater or oversized jacket with some worn-in denim and boots, so definitely a fall girl over here.

If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Blue, without a doubt. It’s pretty much the only color I wear, other than neutrals. That being said, yellow is sneaking up on me! I branched out of my comfort zone with the Piste Cardigan in Lemon from this Spring collection and it’s quickly becoming a favorite. When I wear it I just feel brighter. And I have been getting so many compliments on how it brings out the blue in my eyes which is always nice to hear :)

What’s one small thing that brings you joy lately?
So many things! I’ve been really leaning into my home lately. When I moved here a year ago I had no idea how much beauty it would bring into my life, and the home is starting to reflect that. I try to swim in the river by my house a few times a week, and that always brings me back to my body. Nothing is better when I'm stressed. I’ve also really been loving the drive into town — I live in Ojai, somewhat remotely up a canyon road, and the fifteen minute drive into town used to feel like a pain but has lately become one of my favorite parts of living here. It’s so beautiful and I often feel like I’m in Italy. I love passing the overlook as you descend into the valley at sunset with a sign that says Dreams Come True. I’ve been feeling that lately :)

What ER pieces are you wearing?
I’ve been a long time fan of the Henley tee — I’ve had different iterations over the years and have been wearing the cream one all the time. It’s become my favorite piece to wear around the house. The pointelle is ridiculously soft.
But really I’m obsessed with the Romy Pintuck skirt (as you may be able to tell). It is so wispy, and the quality and design is unmatched. I feel so effortlessly romantic and feminine in it, whether I’m floating about town running to the farmer’s market or playing music in the yard. Emma’s pieces really have a special quality to them that really translates to how you feel when you wear them.
